CPA Licensure Pathways

Nebraska is working to modernize its Public Accountancy Act to create a new pathway to CPA, while adjusting the experience requirements for all pathways. In January 2026, the Nebraska Society of CPAs worked with state legislators to introduce a bill to add the new pathway and, in May 2026, the bill was signed into law by Governor Pillen. The new pathway, which includes a bachelor's degree plus 2 years of experience, is anticipated to become effective mid-July 2026. Stay tuned!

Here are the basic steps to become a CPA in Nebraska.

Step 1 - Join the Nebraska Society of CPAs as a Student Member. It's free!

Step 2 - Complete the Educational Requirements to qualify to sit for the CPA Exam.

Step 3 - Pass the Uniform CPA Exam

Step 4 - Take the Professional Ethics Exam.

Step 5 - Apply for a Nebraska CPA Certificate.

Step 6 - Complete the Experience Requirement.

Step 7 - Apply for a Nebraska Permit to Practice.
